My all-time favorite female vocalist.  Probably would never have made it on American Idol, but she was the real deal.  See more great photos from Woodstock.  It’s the 40th anniversary.

Coolest agency website ever.  OK, maybe not the coolest site ever.  I’d have to vote for my own, wouldn’t I.  http://www.mullen.com/  But it is clever.  Some have complained it’s more a gimmick, which it might be, but it sure feels fresh, different, and makes me wish I’d thought of it.

Generate ads automatically with Ad Generator.  According to creator Alexis Lloyd, “Words and semantic structures from real corporate slogans are remixed and randomized to generate invented slogans. These slogans are then paired with related images from Flickr, thereby generating fake advertisements on the fly. By remixing corporate slogans, I intend to show how the language of advertising is both deeply meaningful, in that it represents real cultural values and desires, and yet utterly meaningless in that these ideas have no relationship to the products being sold. In using the Flickr images, the piece explores the relationship between language and image, and how meaning is constructed by the juxtaposition of the two.

In the 0.8 seconds the Space Shuttle Atlantis took to cross the sun, French astrophotographer Thierry Legault snapped this picture with a five-inch telescope and a digital camera.

Gary Vaynerchuk is amazing.  Of course you already know that.  Send him an email and within seconds you get back this response:  a video explaining why he can’t get back to you in person instantly, but promising that he will do soon.  Includes other helpful information as well.  If you haven’t figured out how to do social media personally or begin building your own personal brand, he is the graduate course.  And tuition is free.

David Hockney has always embraced technology and change.  Photography in the 70’s, collage in the 80’s, laser copiers in the 90’s, and later that decade fax machines to share his art and drawings with friends.  Now he’s moved onto the iPhone, using it primarily to send his friends “fresh flowers that never die.” Above left, from 1996, Cactus with Lemons.  And on the right, a recent iPhone creation, displayed in Hockney’s miniature easel.  Thanks to @DOONCARD for inspiring this post.

In a new book, Conversations with Frank Gehry, the 80-year-old architect talks, answering questions from Barbara Isenberg. I always find it interesting to hear artists and creative people talk about their beginnings, their motives and their inspiration.  Gehry was influenced more by artists than architects from those you might expect (Robert Rauschenberg) to others that might surprise you (Vermeer.) Here’s a review in the NY Times and another from the LA Times, Gehry’s “hometown” newspaper.
